Soil and pH: the basis of nutrient uptake

If the pH drifts, the rose may receive nutrients but still not be able to absorb them. Here you get a quick measurement guide (at home and in a lab), then safe correction steps for acidic and alkaline soils, with indicative dosage rates.   • Target pH: 6.0–6.8 (slightly acidic to neutral).
  • Measure first: 2–3 samples, from 10–20 cm depth; repeat every 2–3 weeks after correction.
  • Small steps: to acidify use sulphur/iron sulphate; to raise pH use dolomite (Mg–Ca carbonate) – in several applications.
  • Organic matter: compost improves pH buffering and water balance.
  • Containers: airy medium, refresh yearly; pH changes faster → measure more often.

Depending on soil texture and organic matter content, soil pH responds more slowly or more quickly to interventions.

pH measurement (home & lab)

  • Sample: from 2–3 spots, 10–20 cm deep; mix, lightly dry and sieve.
  • Quick method: pH test strip or portable pH meter (1:2 ratio: 1 part soil, 2 parts distilled water).
  • Lab: more accurate + micronutrient profile; recommended before major correction.
  • Repeat: 2–3 weeks after correction, then once per season.

Alkaline soil → acidifying

Goal: above pH 7.0, gradually move towards around 6.5. Smaller, repeated doses are safer.

  • Elemental sulphur (S): slow, long-lasting; effect starts within 3–8 weeks.
  • Iron sulphate: faster, temporary; also good for alleviating chlorosis.
  • Organic matter: compost, peat substitutes – improve buffering.
  • Apply in dry weather, work it in shallowly (5–8 cm), then water thoroughly.
  • Carry out major corrections in several stages (2–3 passes) with 3–4 week intervals.

Acidic soil → liming

Goal: if pH is below 5.5, raise it to between 6.0 and 6.5. Avoid overdosing → increase in stages.

  • Dolomite (Ca–Mg carbonate): gentle pH increase + magnesium supplementation.
  • Hydrated lime / lime: faster but more aggressive – in home gardens prefer dolomite.
  • Compost: improves buffering, boosts microbial activity.

  • Elemental sulphur: 1–3 g/L medium, in several doses; always water thoroughly afterwards.
  • Dolomite: 2–5 g/L medium (mixed in); measure pH after 2–3 weeks.
  • Compost: replace the top 3–5 cm yearly; fully refresh the mix every 2–3 years.

  • Mix: rose soil/potting compost + compost + perlite/pumice (light, airy).
  • Target pH: 6.0–6.5; changes more quickly → check pH more often.
  • Refreshing: replace the top 5–8 cm every year; partial repotting every 2–3 years.

  • On compacted urban soils: deep loosening to 30–40 cm; partial soil replacement, incorporation of compost.
  • With salt load: mulch + leaching irrigation after winter salting; choose varieties from more tolerant lines.

Signs & common mistakes

Typical signs

  • Chlorosis (yellowing leaves with green veins): often due to alkaline pH → acidify and add iron.
  • Reddish, distorted leaves: suspicion of overly acidic pH / P deficiency.
  • Poor growth: compacted soil, pH shift, low organic matter.

Common mistakes

  • Large one-off dose → overshooting the pH, root damage.
  • Correction without measurement → unnecessary material use, fluctuations.
  • Trying to acidify calcareous, strongly buffered soil → slow reaction; patience and several passes needed.

FAQ

How often should I measure pH?
For an initial baseline, take 2–3 measurements; after correction, check again after 2–3 weeks; afterwards once per season. In containers, more often.
Can I use coffee grounds to acidify?
In small amounts they are fine as organic matter, but they rarely lower pH significantly – do not rely on them without measurement.
What should I do if I overcorrected?
Thorough watering (leaching), working in compost, waiting and re-testing; if needed, make a small counter-correction in several stages.
