Planting: how to get off to a sure start
Planting is when it is decided whether your rose settles in quickly, or spends months “struggling to find its place”. Here we go step by step through choosing the site, soil preparation, planting depth and puddling-in, then the watering schedule for the first few weeks. Quick principles
- Location: sunny, well-ventilated position (min. 5–6 hours of sun).
- Soil: loose, free-draining; pH 6.0–6.8; rich in organic matter.
- Depth: for own-root roses the top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface (in cold, windy sites up to 2–3 cm below).
- Puddling-in: while backfilling, water in in 2 stages so that the soil settles in around the roots.
- Mulch: 5–8 cm bark/compost; leave a 2–3 cm ring clear around the stem.
- First weeks: deep watering; avoid light surface watering and keep foliage dry.
Own-root – basal shoots strengthen the variety; long lifespan, good ability to regenerate.

Location & soil
- Light & wind: at least half a day of direct sun; avoid cold, damp hollows.
- Soil: crumbly, well-drained; on heavy soil add compost + washed sand, on sandy soil compost + biochar/zeolite.
- pH: the ideal range is 6.0–6.8.

Step by step
- Watering in the pot: thoroughly soak the root ball before planting.
- Planting hole: twice the width of the root ball; loosen the sides and base.
- Mix: work compost into the excavated soil (and a loosening material if needed).
- Trial placement & depth: the top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface.
- Puddling-in (I): backfill halfway, water well; wait for it to drain.
- Puddling-in (II): finish backfilling, water again.
- Watering basin & mulch: form a rim; 5–8 cm mulch, leaving a 2–3 cm ring clear around the stem.

Planting depth
For own-root roses the top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface. In windy, frosty positions it is acceptable to plant 2–3 cm deeper. Do not plant too deep (risk of standing water and low oxygen around the roots).
First weeks
- Watering: for the first 2–4 weeks water deeply 2–3 times per week (8–10 L per plant); after that you can switch to the normal schedule.
- Shading: during heatwaves you can provide temporary afternoon shade to prevent scorching.
- Nutrition: until the first flush of flowers only feed lightly, then follow a regular feeding schedule.

Private garden – specifics
- Spacing: according to mature size (usually 45–60 cm for bush types).
- Soil: in borders, deep loosening + compost; avoid frost pockets.

- Container: large drainage holes + 3–5 cm drainage layer; min. 10–15 L (depending on type).

- Container-grown (2 L): can be planted almost any time in frost-free conditions.
- Bare-root: autumn (from leaf fall until frost) and early spring (after the ground thaws).

Common mistakes
- Planting too deep → root suffocation, poor growth.
- “Sipping” with small amounts of water → roots stay near the surface, more drought sensitive.
- Pressing mulch up against the stem → risk of rot.

FAQ
When is it worth planting container-grown roses?
In frost-free weather, any time from spring to autumn; in hot spells avoid planting into the full midday sun during the first week.
How firmly should I firm back the soil?
By hand, gently – just enough to remove air pockets, without making the soil rock hard.
Do I need a stake next to the plant?
In windy spots, temporary staking is effective, but remove it once the roots are established.
