Own-root mini and patio roses – care – PharmaRosa®

Mini/patio: compact roses for small spaces

Looking for a mini/patio rose for a balcony or small garden and want the plant to stay compact but flower abundantly? Here you’ll quickly find the recommended pot size, airy growing medium, watering and feeding schedule (including a heatwave protocol), deadheading, and overwintering options. What’s your biggest challenge: summer drought, repotting or overwintering?

Quick principles

  • Pot size: start with 5–7 L, for the long term 7–12 L.
  • Medium: loose, airy (rose/flower compost + compost + perlite/pumice).
  • Pruning: from year 2 light shaping, continuous removal of spent blooms.
  • Watering: 2–4 litres every 2–4 days; in hot weather water more often, but don’t leave water standing in the saucer.
  • Nutrients: spring CRF + during the season a monthly liquid top-up; autumn without N.

Characteristics

  • Compact habit, continuous flowering – ideal for balconies and small gardens.
  • In containers the medium dries out and depletes faster → needs regular watering/feeding.

Positioning & pot size

Environment Recommendation Note
Balcony / terrace 5–7 L to start, 7–12 L for long-term growing Large drainage hole, 2–3 cm drainage layer
Private garden (bed) 30–40 cm spacing Quick cover, low maintenance
Inner courtyard / shade effect Bright, airy position In rain shadow pay extra attention to watering

Pruning – mini/patio

  • Year 1: health pruning only; minimal shaping if needed to keep the form.
  • From year 2: light shaping (about 1/3 of shoot length); regularly remove spent flowers.
  • Container-specific point: too much foliage causes rapid drying – keep it compact.

Technique: Pruning – basic stepsGroup-specific guidelines.

Watering

  • Pot/terrace: 2–4 litres every 2–4 days; during heatwaves, smaller daily amounts may be needed.
  • Saucer: always pour off excess after 10–15 minutes.
  • Timing: in the morning; avoid wetting foliage to reduce fungal diseases.

Details: Watering.

Nutrients

  • CRF in the medium: 2–5 g/L mixed in (when filling the container) or worked into the top 5–8 cm.
  • Liquid supplement: every 3–4 weeks in season; a lower concentration is recommended.
  • Late summer: K-focused; no N after mid-August.

Indicative doses: LiquidCRF.

Plant protection

  • Prevention: good air flow, morning watering onto the soil, 2–3 cm mulch on top of the medium.
  • Container-specific point: dense growth can become humid → thin out and improve air flow if needed.
  • Starting point: gentle products (potassium soap/white oil, biological products), rotate if necessary.

Guide: Plant protection.

Timing (key points)

  • Spring: refresh container medium, starter feed; light shaping.
  • Summer: regular deadheading; heatwave protocol for watering.
  • Autumn: stop N; refresh the top 3–5 cm of medium; prepare for overwintering.
  • Winter: water sparingly in a frost-free, bright place; outdoors only in insulated containers.

FAQ

How long can it stay in the same pot?
Generally 2–3 years; refresh the top 5–8 cm of medium every year, then partial repotting is recommended.
How often should I feed with liquid fertiliser?
Every 3–4 weeks in the season; always onto pre-moistened medium, using the manufacturer’s dilution ratio.
Can it overwinter outside on the balcony?
Only in a sheltered, covered spot and in an insulated container; frost-free, bright overwintering is safer – Overwintering – container.
