Why did budding become the foundation of rose production for decades, and why is the market now turning back to own-root plants? When did roses first enter commercial trade?

The earliest documented rose trade dates back to the 17th–18th centuries, when rose breeding and collecting were no longer the privilege of the nobility alone but increasingly became accessible to the middle classes as well. In Europe, it was first in France and England that nurseries emerged where roses were specifically propagated for sale.

How were roses propagated and grown in the 17th–19th centuries?

  • Layering: This was the oldest and most straightforward method. Rose shoots were bent down to the ground, covered with soil and, once roots had formed, separated from the mother plant. It took a long time but gave reliable results. The roses developed on their own roots.
  • Division: Mainly used for species that tend to form clumps and root suckers. The plant was lifted and divided into sections – this way several individuals could be obtained from one mother plant. The new plants continued to grow on their own roots.
  • Cuttings: Although today this is one of the main methods for producing own-root roses, at that time it was rarely used because rooting technology was not widely available.
  • Seed propagation: Used for breeding, as seedlings from seed showed a wide range of characteristics. Variety identity could not be guaranteed, so it was of limited use in commercial production.

Turning point: 1867 – the beginning of modern roses

This was the year the world’s first officially recognised hybrid tea rose, ‘La France’, appeared. It did not only bring a new type of flower shape and fragrance, but also launched a completely new era in commercial rose growing. From then on, the rose was no longer just an ornamental plant but a mass product – a whole network of nurseries, breeders and gardeners was built around it.

What was needed for this?

  • Varieties with large flowers that could be propagated easily.
  • A transportable format (bare-root plants).
  • Budding as an industrial technology – a single bud (eye) of the cultivated rose was inserted onto a wild rootstock (e.g. Rosa canina); at the technological level of the time this was the best method for rapidly propagating identical varieties.
  • Market demand, primarily for ornamental gardens, later for public spaces.

Cultivation – the beginning of nursery rose fields

Roses began to be sold as ornamental plants at the markets of larger towns, first in pots, later as bare-root plants. Open-field growing was typical, and plants were often sold by travelling gardeners or nursery helpers at fairs and markets.

By the mid-19th century, a seasonal cycle of transport and sales had taken shape: lifting in autumn, shipping in winter, planting in spring. By the second half of the 19th century, roses had become a mass-produced, saleable commodity. From then on, it was not only about their beauty, but also about how they could be produced efficiently, cheaply and in a transportable way – and then delivered to the buyer.


The weak point of the budded rose: the bud union

The budding point where the bud of the cultivated rose joins the rootstock is sensitive and vulnerable. This area:

  • is prone to frost damage,
  • is sensitive to physical injury,
  • can become waterlogged under weeds or ground cover,
  • and may weaken over time.

The different genetics of the roots and shoots can cause long-term biological imbalance, especially in older plants. Some varieties are prone to “separating” from the rootstock after several years.


Deliberate protection or retraining?

Nowadays many people try to protect the cultivated part by planting the bud union below soil level. But this is more than just protection: if the cultivated part forms its own roots, the plant returns to an “own-root” state.

This is a deliberate cultivation decision: the rose shifts onto its own roots and becomes independent of the rootstock.

In practice it can also be seen as retraining:

  • it increases the plant’s independence and ability to regenerate,
  • its lifespan may be extended,
  • diseases and weaknesses originating from the rootstock can be avoided.

21st-century constraints – and a new role

In recent decades, rose production and trade have been transformed from the ground up. The once dominant budded rose is facing more and more challenges – as a result of market, social and technological changes.

What has changed?

  • Labour shortage: budding requires a great deal of manual work. In a single season, tens of thousands of buds have to be inserted, cut back and cared for – all of which demands trained, precise professional labour, while the availability of skilled workers is steadily decreasing.
  • Wider product range but lower volumes: in the past, large series were produced from 5–10 rose varieties. Nowadays buyers look for a wide range of varieties in smaller quantities, which makes budding more expensive per plant and less economical. The ornamental plant range has also widened with many other species.
  • Generational change in home gardens: new garden owners often do not know the needs of budded roses (e.g. protection of the bud union, dieback, cutting back rootstock shoots). They have little time and want simpler solutions.
  • The rise of online shopping: bare-root budded roses have a short shipping and storage window. Although cold storage can extend this, it often reduces quality (water loss, root damage, stress).

The rediscovery of own-root roses

Modern technology has made it possible to propagate own-root roses reliably and in large volumes.

  • Storability: in containers they can be stored and transported without needing a dormant period.
  • Variety range: more flexible; new varieties can be introduced more quickly, without waiting years for rootstocks to bud onto.
  • User-friendly: they do not require special protection or cutting back, which makes them more attractive for today’s buyers.
  • Quality and availability: own-root roses are in tune with modern market expectations: simpler, more accessible and more reliable.

The age of the budded rose is fading

The budded rose, which is economical only with large quantities per variety and requires a lot of manual work, fits less and less with the needs of today’s ornamental plant market. Own-root roses, on the other hand, are easier to grow, simpler for the end user, and can be handled more flexibly in distribution. Today the rose market recognises them as a reform product – not a step backwards, but a response to the challenges of our time.

Why is the market turning towards own-root roses?

When we say that “the age of the budded rose is fading”, we are not questioning the professional value of budding. The real point is that the business model of the budded (grafted/budded onto rootstock), typically bare-root rose is finding it increasingly hard to meet today’s expectations of flexibility, logistics and user experience across many sales channels. At the same time, the own-root (mostly container-grown) rose is, in many situations, easier to plan with, delivers more consistent quality and carries less risk for the buyer.

1) Why did budding become the “industrial standard” for so long?

With the mass spread of modern roses, from the late 19th century onwards, roses became a genuine mass-market product. At that time, budding was the best tool for this because:

  • it enabled fast and variety-true propagation in large quantities,
  • the transportable bare-root product model with a seasonal cycle (lifting–storage–shipping–planting) became established,
  • in many cases the rootstock helped with initial establishment and adaptation to certain soil and climatic conditions.

This system worked best when relatively few varieties were produced in large series and trade operated mainly in an offline, strongly seasonal mode.

2) What has changed for growers in the 21st century?

Budding is a high-quality technology, but it is labour-intensive and in several places depends heavily on manual work. Today this is an increasing constraint:

  • Labour shortage and wage pressure: budding requires trained, precise seasonal workers.
  • More varieties, smaller series: customers want a wide assortment in smaller batches; this pushes up unit costs.
  • Planning and risk: more manual steps mean more potential for error and more organisational exposure.

The result: budding can still be efficient for very large, uniform lots, but in many of today’s market channels this is no longer the production logic that is rewarded.

3) What has changed in trade and logistics?

Online sales and fast, order-driven fulfilment favour product formats that are flexible to handle. Bare-root products that depend on dormancy mean a narrow time window in many cases, while longer storage can carry quality risks (water loss, root stress, general decline).

The container-grown model, by contrast, can often be sold over a longer period and more easily aligned with delivery logistics. This is especially important where the customer does not buy within a “single seasonal window”, but when they make their decision.

4) Professional horticultural reason: the bud union as a risk point

The bud union (where rootstock and cultivated part meet) is a biologically and physically sensitive junction. In practice, several types of problem can converge at this single point:

  • Frost damage and vulnerability: the union is more easily damaged under adverse conditions.
  • Need for intervention: protection, planting depth, managing dieback – all require knowledge and attention.
  • Rootstock shoots: these need to be recognised and removed regularly, and are a frequent source of user error.

This is not a “fault” of budding, but a practical consequence of the technology: it shifts more risk and more tasks onto the end user.

5) Why is the own-root rose a “reform product”?

The rise of own-root roses is not a fashion trend but an adaptation to today’s conditions:

From the grower’s perspective:

  • fewer “labour-critical” points, which often means more reliable planning,
  • in operations with small batch sizes and a wide variety range, often more flexible stock management,
  • in container systems the plant’s condition can in many cases be better controlled up to the point of dispatch.

From the user’s perspective:

  • no rootstock sucker problem,
  • if the plant dies back, its regrowth is from the same variety,
  • fewer “rules” and fewer opportunities for mistakes – a more user-friendly experience.

6) Nuance: budded roses still have their place

Budded roses are still justified and competitive in certain situations: for large, uniform batches, in specific soil and climate conditions, or where maintenance is professional and care routines are strictly followed. The essence of the change is therefore not a technical judgement, but a shift in market emphasis.

7) What should you take away as a garden owner?

  • If you want simpler care and less risk, in many cases an own-root rose is the more straightforward choice.
  • If you are planting in particularly challenging conditions, it is worth considering from a professional standpoint whether the benefits of a rootstock will give you a real advantage.

In summary: own-root roses come to the fore wherever the market rewards flexibility, a longer selling season, more consistent delivery condition and a more user-friendly experience. This is not a step backwards, but a modern answer to today’s challenges.
