ALCAZAR™ – orange-red bedding floribunda rose - Gaujard

With its vivid orange-red blooms and silvery petal reverses, ALCAZAR™ brings colour and relaxed elegance to smaller Irish gardens without demanding complicated care. Bred in France in the 1960s, this floribunda combines dense, upright growth with reliably uniform bushes that look well-organised even in modest front beds or along a path. Its remontant flowering habit keeps clusters of semi-double blooms appearing from early summer into autumn, ensuring long-lasting display if You simply keep it watered and occasionally deadhead. Own-root plants settle steadily, developing roots in year one, more generous shoots in year two and full ornamental value by year three, so You can plan confidently around its maturing shape. Disease resistance is a real everyday advantage here: foliage stays healthy and glossy with minimal spraying even in a humid, rain-prone climate, reducing weekend garden chores. The medium height and generous spread suit family gardens where children still need space to play while beds stay richly planted. In coastal or exposed spots it copes well when given reasonable drainage and shelter from the very worst winds. Whether You prefer mixed cottage-style borders or neat, modern groupings, this versatile bedding rose works as a reliable anchor plant. Its gentle, slightly sweet fragrance and clusters ideal for cutting add simple pleasure indoors, while the long-lived, own-root structure supports a stable, easy-care rose that will continue to perform for many years.

Use cases

Target area Reason
Front garden feature rose The medium-tall, upright habit and vivid orange-red blooms create a clear focal point beside your front door or along the path. Dense, dark green foliage gives structure all season, suiting homeowners who like a tidy entrance and beginners
Small bedding groups (1–5 plants) Uniform growth and repeat flowering make it ideal for small groups that look balanced without much planning. Plant 3–5 together for a rounded, glowing bed that fills out over the first three seasons as roots, then shoots, then full display steadily develop for busy-gardeners
Low-maintenance family borders High resistance to black spot, mildew and rust keeps leaves clean with minimal spraying, which is reassuring in busy family gardens where time and chemical use are both limited, particularly appreciated by health-conscious households
Mixed cottage-style border The rich orange-red flowers, with their silvery reverses, blend beautifully with soft grasses and perennials, adding romantic colour without overwhelming the scheme. It suits those who enjoy a relaxed, traditional look but prefer straightforward care for hobby-gardeners
Cutting patch or kitchen-garden edge Clustered, medium-sized blooms on strong stems are easy to cut for vases, and the mild, slightly sweet scent adds gentle charm indoors. This dual-purpose role suits gardeners who like to bring flowers inside while keeping plots practical for home-stylists
Coastal or exposed suburban gardens Robust foliage, solid stems and good health help it cope with breezier, damp conditions near the coast, performing reliably where other roses struggle with persistent moisture and salt-laden air in an Atlantic-influenced, windy setting for coastal owners
Informal flowering hedge Planted at 55 cm spacing, its upright, branching habit and dense leaves form a low, colourful hedge that marks boundaries without feeling heavy, a good answer for families wanting privacy and year-round structure in compact gardens for urban-neighbours
Large containers on patios or balconies In a 40–50 litre or larger container with good drainage, it offers long flowering, healthy foliage and neat form, ideal for paved spaces where soil is limited but colour is welcome, especially suitable for time-pressed balcony and patio residents

Decorating ideas

  • COTTAGE TRIO – Group ALCAZAR™ with lavender and catmint along a front path for a soft cottage feel and easy summer colour – for lovers of relaxed, romantic entrances
  • WARM BEDDING STRIPE – Create a bold orange-red ribbon in a narrow bed, edging it with low thyme or lamb’s ear to highlight the glossy foliage – for tidy, low-fuss front gardens
  • GRASS AND GLOW – Combine with Pennisetum alopecuroides and pale echinacea for a modern, textural border where the flowers flicker like embers – for contemporary design fans
  • PATIO STATEMENT – Plant a single bush in a 50 litre terracotta pot, underplant with trailing ivy and white lobelia for long-lasting terrace interest – for balcony and patio owners
  • FAMILY CUTTING CORNER – Set a small cluster beside the vegetable patch with cosmos and zinnias so children can pick safe, cheerful bunches – for family gardeners with children

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration ALCAZAR™ is a floribunda bedding rose from the pharmaROSA ORIGINAL range, known in shows as Alcazar. It belongs to the bed rose group and is supplied here as an own-root plant for garden use.
Origin and breeding Bred by Jean-Marie Gaujard at Roseraies Gaujard, France, from cross Jolie Princesse × (Opera × Miss France). Introduced around 1960–1961 and distributed by Roseraies Gaujard as a garden bedding floribunda.
Growth and structure Medium-tall, upright bush reaching about 100–140 cm in height and 75–105 cm spread. Forms dense, well-furnished plants with dark green, glossy foliage and moderate prickliness, ideal for beds, small groups and low hedges.
Flower morphology Semi-double, cupped blooms with 13–25 petals, borne in clusters on branching stems. Medium-sized flowers (approximately 4–7 cm) repeat freely through the season, though spent blooms benefit from deadheading as self-cleaning is weak.
Colour and phenology Flowers open vivid orange-red with a coppery tone and silvery-pink reverse, deepening to rich red as they mature. Colour holds well in sun, with a pale, silvery underside on outer petals offering contrast from bud to full bloom.
Fragrance and aroma Light, slightly sweet fragrance that is pleasant but not overpowering, suitable for seating areas and front gardens. Provides a gentle rose scent without dominating nearby plants or outdoor spaces.
Rose hip characteristics Produces moderate numbers of small, spherical hips about 10–14 mm across. Hips are bright red and decorative in autumn, adding seasonal interest if some faded blooms are left uncut after the main flowering period.
Resistance and hardiness Hardy to approximately -21 to -18 °C (RHS H7, USDA 6b, Swedish zone 3). Shows good resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust, maintaining healthy foliage under typical garden conditions with basic care.
Horticultural recommendations Thrives in sunny positions with well-drained soil and regular watering in drought. Plant at 55–65 cm for hedges or mass beds, 100 cm as a specimen. Best performance from 2-litre own-root stock that is allowed to establish steadily.

ALCAZAR™ offers vivid long-season colour, reliable disease resistance and versatile bedding or container use, while its own-root form supports long-lived, steadily improving plants; You may find it a reassuring choice for an easy-care garden.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
