AUF DIE FREUNDSCHAFT ® – white-red bedding shrub rose – Kordes

If You would like a reliable rose that simply settles in and performs, AUF DIE FREUNDSCHAFT ® is an upright, compact shrub rose that suits the average Irish family garden. The dense, dark green foliage and medium height make it naturally neat along paths, in front gardens and around patios, while its white blooms with vivid coral-red edges create a lively, colourful effect from early summer onwards. It repeats very well, with generous clusters of semi-double flowers over the season, so even a small group soon looks abundantly flowery. The good tolerance of heat and short dry spells means it stays presentable during unsettled summers and occasional hosepipe gaps, even in our changeable, moisture-heavy climate. As an own-root shrub it gradually becomes strong and long-lived, rebuilding from its own base after harder pruning and giving You a stable planting that matures year by year. Expect a natural development arc: first the roots in year one, then stronger shoots in year two, and by year three the full impact in your border.

Use cases

Target area Reason
Front garden feature bed The medium, upright shrub size and dense foliage create a tidy look that works well beside drives and front paths. Repeating white-and-red clusters stand out against brick or render and stay attractive with only basic care, ideal for the busy homeowner
Low flowering hedge along boundaries Planted at hedge spacing, the compact height and bushy habit join together into a low, colourful screen. The rose responds well to light trimming, gradually forming a cohesive, long-lived hedge that frames lawns or separates play space for the family gardener
Small group planting in mixed borders Groups of three to five plants fill a narrow border quickly, their repeat-blooming clusters providing structure among perennials. The own-root habit helps each shrub adapt to existing soil and care routines, giving steady performance for the casual gardener
Easy-care cottage-style bed by the house The romantic bi-coloured flowers pair beautifully with traditional cottage companions, bringing soft colour without demanding pruning skills. Its moderate maintenance needs suit informal beds where You want charm and reliability, perfect for the cottage-garden lover
Coastal or exposed suburban gardens With good tolerance of warmth and managed dryness, this shrub copes well with breezy, salt-laced Atlantic air and heavy garden soils if drainage is improved. It offers stable flowering where other roses can struggle, helpful for the coastal resident
Roses in larger patio containers In a 40–50 litre or larger container, its upright, bushy shape and repeat clusters make a dependable patio rose. It settles well if watered and fed regularly, giving a long-lived own-root specimen in reach of the table for the balcony or patio owner
Family lawn edge or play-area border The medium height and reasonably compact spread define paths and lawn edges without towering over children. Moderate prickliness discourages cutting across beds, while the long flowering season keeps the garden cheerful for the young family
Public-style or shared entrance planting Originally bred for robust garden and park use, it copes well with ordinary, mixed care standards. The dependable rebloom and tidy foliage provide a reliable backdrop at shared entrances or driveways, reassuring for the first-time planter

Decorating ideas

  • Neighbourly Welcome – Plant a trio by the front gate with lavender and low rosemary to echo the rose’s upright shape and bi-coloured flowers, creating a friendly first impression – for sociable homeowners
  • Cottage Ribbon – Line a narrow cottage path with a single row, weaving in catmint and hardy geraniums for a soft, flowing edge of colour – for fans of informal borders
  • Patio Gathering – Use one shrub in a 50 litre container, underplanted with trailing thyme and small violas, to bring summery colour beside seating areas – for compact patios and balconies
  • Family Frame – Create a loose frame around a small lawn, mixing the rose with echinacea and ornamental grasses for a playful yet tidy outline – for families wanting simple structure
  • Park-Style Corner – Mass-plant five to seven bushes in a sunny corner, then soften the back with hydrangeas for a park-like, long-season feature – for those who enjoy low-effort impact

Technical cultivar profile
Characteristic Data
Name and registration Shrub rose from the Heckenzauber collection, registered as KORbaymun. Marketed as AUF DIE FREUNDSCHAFT ®, Heckenzauber® and Color Splash, in the bed and flowerbed shrub rose commercial groups.
Origin and breeding Hybrid of Black Forest Rose ® (KORschwill) × Philatelie (MACcastler), bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes in Germany in 2007 and introduced by W. Kordes’ Söhne in 2016.
Growth and structure Medium-height upright shrub, around 100–140 cm tall and 50–70 cm wide. Forms a bushy, dense structure with glossy dark green foliage and moderate prickliness suitable for hedging or bed use.
Flower morphology Semi-double, cupped flowers with 17–25 petals, produced in clusters on the stems. Medium-sized blooms (approximately 4–7 cm) that remont well, giving a generous and abundant second flush.
Colour and phenology Striking bicolour effect: bright white base with vivid coral to cherry-red edging. Colour softens to creamy white and pinkish tones as blooms age, creating multi-tone clusters through the flowering period.
Fragrance and aroma Fragrance is very weak and barely perceptible, making it suitable for those preferring roses chosen for colour and garden performance rather than strong scent around seating or open windows.
Rose hip characteristics Rose hips are sparse due to the semi-double form; when present they are small, about 10–14 mm, ellipsoid and orange-red, adding modest late-season interest without heavy seeding.
Resistance and hardiness Winter-hardy to approximately −21 to −18 °C (USDA 6b, RHS H7). Moderate resistance to powdery mildew and black spot, resistant to rust; tolerates heat well and withstands moderate drought with care.
Horticultural recommendations Prefers sunny sites with reasonably drained soil; plant at 35–65 cm depending on hedge or specimen use. Maintenance is moderate, with occasional pest and disease checks advisable for best display.

AUF DIE FREUNDSCHAFT ® offers compact structure, long-season repeat flowering and easy everyday care as an own-root shrub that matures reliably over time, making it a sound choice if You want a dependable, attractive rose.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
