Claire Rose – AUSlight English shrub rose

If You dream of a romantic, cottage-style rose that still feels manageable in an Irish family garden, Claire Rose (AUSlight) is a tall, elegant English shrub rose with large, very full, porcelain-pink rosettes and a strong, classic rose scent. It settles in reliably even where the ground can be heavy and winters are damp, coping well with our humidity and the need for good drainage in heavier clay soils. In a sunny spot it forms an upright, bushy shrub that flowers in generous flushes, giving You a feature for the front or back garden that looks richly old-fashioned without demanding expert skills. The 2-litre own-root plant is already well rooted when it arrives, ready to establish steadily and build a long-lived framework that regenerates from its own base. With basic care and occasional deadheading, You can enjoy years of height, colour and fragrance, watching it move from rooting in its first season, through building strong shoots in its second, to delivering its full ornamental impact by around the third year – a quietly dependable choice if You simply want to plant it and let it flourish.

Use cases

Target area Reason
Feature rose in a small front garden bed The tall, upright, bushy habit (up to about 150–210 cm) creates instant vertical interest in limited space, giving You a single, eye-catching focal shrub by the path or beside the door that suits busy homeowners who want romance without complicated layout planning for beginners
Romantic cottage-style mixed border Its very full, rosette-shaped porcelain pink blooms and dark green foliage slot beautifully among perennials and grasses, bringing a soft, traditional English-rose mood to Irish cottage and rural gardens for homeowners
Sunny flower bed for repeat summer colour Claire Rose blooms in generous flushes through the season, with a reliable second flowering, so the same shrub can carry multiple waves of pastel pink colour, ideal if You want steady summer interest from a small planted area for families
Scented seating area or patio edge The strong, long-lasting, classic rose fragrance is best appreciated close up, so placing it near a bench, patio or favourite sitting spot means You enjoy perfume on warm evenings without needing to maintain a large, high-input rose collection for urban
Cutting corner for home arrangements Large, very full blooms on clustered stems make charming cut flowers; a single shrub can provide regular stems for vases and informal jugs indoors, adding value beyond the garden bed for hobby
Long-term structural rose in a family garden As an own-root shrub with good hardiness down to about -26 °C, it builds a durable, regenerating framework over the years, giving stable structure and reliable flowering without the graft union worries of traditional roses for planners
Coastal-town or exposed suburban garden Good tolerance of heat and short dry spells, combined with reliable establishment in typical Irish conditions, makes it suitable for breezier, more open plots where soil can be heavier and rainfall high, provided drainage is improved for coastal
Larger container on a sunny terrace In a 40–50 litre or larger pot with quality compost and regular watering, its upright, bushy habit lets You enjoy an English shrub rose on balconies or patios, ideal for those with limited ground who still want a classic garden look for balconies

Decorating ideas

  • Cottage Front Border – Plant Claire Rose near the gate with Gypsophila repens and blue sedge for a soft, cottagey welcome – perfect for rural homes wanting romantic kerb appeal.
  • Pastel Seating Nook – Place it by a bench and underplant with lavender and white campanulas to make a scented corner for evening tea – ideal for fragrance lovers.
  • Elegant Feature Pair – Use two shrubs flanking a path or driveway, with low moss phlox at their feet, to frame the entrance in gentle pink – suited to formal-leaning front gardens.
  • Mixed Perennial Bed – Combine with hydrangeas, salvias and ornamental grasses so the tall rose anchors changing seasonal colour – good for gardeners who like relaxed, naturalistic planting.
  • Large Terrace Pot – Grow one plant in a 50 litre container with trailing thyme around the rim to bring classic English-rose charm onto a sunny balcony or terrace – ideal for apartment dwellers.

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Claire Rose – AUSlight; English Rose shrub, Romantic rose group. Registered cultivar name AUSlight, ARS exhibition name Claire Rose, part of the English Rose Collection since 1986.
Origin and breeding Bred by David C. H. Austin, United Kingdom. Parentage: ‘Charles Austin’ × (unknown seedling × ‘Iceberg’). Introduced and registered in 1986 by David Austin Roses Ltd.
Growth and structure Upright, bushy shrub rose, around 150–210 cm tall and 100–150 cm wide. Moderately dense, slightly glossy dark green foliage; moderately thorny stems and poor self-cleaning, so spent blooms may need removal.
Flower morphology Large, very full, rosette flowers with more than 40 petals. Clustered inflorescences bearing 3–5 blooms per stem. Repeat flowering, with a generous first flush and a somewhat lighter second flush.
Colour and phenology Soft, pale porcelain pink with warm, subtly creamy tones. Outer petals lighten slightly over time, while inner petals retain more colour. Overall effect is a powdery, romantic pastel pink in full bloom.
Fragrance and aroma Strong, long-lasting, classic rose fragrance with a traditional character. The scent is best enjoyed near seating areas or paths, where repeated flowering provides regular perfumed flushes through the season.
Rose hip characteristics Poor hip production due to very double flowers. Where hips do form, they are small, about 9–15 mm in diameter, spherical and orange-red, adding modest late-season interest.
Resistance and hardiness Hardy to about -26 to -23 °C (H7, USDA 5b). Good heat tolerance and copes with short dry spells if watered in longer droughts. Powdery mildew resistant; black spot and rust moderate, so occasional care may be needed.
Horticultural recommendations Prefers a sunny site. For beds, hedges or specimens, space about 80–160 cm apart. Best in well-drained but moisture-retentive soil; square planting 1.2 plants/m² or hexagonal 1.4 plants/m² for massed effect.

Claire Rose (AUSlight) offers tall, romantic pink blooms, strong fragrance and a durable, own-root shrub that builds long-term structure in Irish gardens, making it a reassuring, low-fuss choice if You are considering a new rose.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
