CHÂTEAU D´AMBOISE – dark red hybrid tea rose

With its noble, dark-red blooms, Château D´Amboise is a classic hybrid tea rose that gives You the feel of a florist-quality flower straight from Your own garden. Each long-stemmed, cup-shaped bloom opens from blackish buds into vivid ruby red and then settles into a velvety maroon, holding its colour with excellent reliability even in strong sun. The bush stays compact and upright, ideal for smaller Irish front gardens where You want structure without fuss, and it copes well with our damp seasons and the challenges of a humid climate with good resistance to black spot. As an own-root plant, it develops into a stable, long-lived shrub that can quietly regenerate from its base, so Your planting matures gracefully over the years. In its first year it concentrates on roots, in the second on sturdy new shoots, and by the third year You enjoy its full ornamental value. Well-suited to mixed borders, low hedges or a single statement by the path, this reliable repeat-flowering rose rewards regular deadheading with flush after flush of blooms, offering both garden beauty and home-grown cut flowers. In a large container of at least 40–50 litres it also works as a smart patio feature, giving You a rich, romantic focal point that remains pleasantly manageable for busy gardeners.

Use cases

Target area Reason
Feature rose in a small front garden The compact, bushy habit and long, straight stems make it easy to place as a single specimen by a front door or window, giving strong colour without overwhelming a modest space and staying easy to shape for beginners
Cutting patch for home bouquets Solitary, florist-style blooms on sturdy stems are perfect for vases; repeat flowering means a steady supply of dark-red roses through the season, so You can cut regularly while the plant keeps the border attractive for homeowners
Formal rose bed or low hedge Recommended spacing allows neat rows or short hedges that look structured; the upright, clump-forming growth line up well in classic rose beds, ideal if You enjoy a tidy, organised garden layout as a hobby-gardener
Mixed border with perennials Dense, glossy foliage forms a dark backdrop for lighter companions such as dwarf lavender, heuchera or coneflowers, adding depth and a romantic focal point in cottage-style borders for rural garden-owners
Easy-care own-root long-term planting The own-root shrub builds a balanced framework over time, regenerating from its base and avoiding graft issues, so with simple watering and feeding it becomes a long-lived anchor plant for busy urban gardeners
Reliable performer in wet, changeable climates Suited to Irish conditions where summers can be damp and cool; its good black-spot resistance and robust growth help it stay attractive even with frequent rain and persistent moisture in the air for coastal households
Season-long colour for family gardens Repeats well, with the second flush also abundant, so from early summer onwards the garden keeps its deep-red highlights without gaps, rewarding simple deadheading routines for time-poor families
Large patio pot or balcony container In a 40–50 litre container with good drainage it forms a manageable, upright shrub; regular watering gives reliable flowering, offering an elegant, space-saving solution for terraces and balconies used by urban residents

Decorating ideas

  • Classic doorway welcome – Plant one or three along the path to your front door, underplanted with dwarf lavender for fragrance and contrast – ideal for homeowners who like a smart, traditional entrance.
  • Romantic cutting corner – Combine a small group of bushes with soft pink or cream roses nearby, leaving space to step in and cut stems – perfect for flower lovers who enjoy arranging their own bouquets.
  • Cottage border drama – Thread it through a mixed border with coneflowers and low heuchera, letting the dark blooms add depth among looser perennials – great for fans of informal cottage-garden style.
  • Formal low hedge – Line a short drive or patio edge with evenly spaced plants, keeping them lightly trimmed for a neat, structured hedge – suited to gardeners who appreciate order with minimal effort.
  • Patio focal container – Grow a single plant in a generous terracotta pot, with trailing thyme or lobelia at the rim for softness – a good choice for balcony and terrace owners wanting high impact in little space.

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Hybrid tea rose cultivar DELrouvel, marketed as Château D´Amboise – dark red hybrid tea rose – Delbard-Chabert; ARS exhibition name Château d’Amboise; pharmaROSA ORIGINAL 2-litre own-root potted rose.
Origin and breeding Bred by André Delbard-Chabert, Delbard (France), introduced and registered in 1988. Seedling of Tropicana × { [Rome Glory × Impeccable] × [Rouge Meilland × Soraya] }, selected for colour and garden performance.
Awards and recognitions Entered as a competitor at the Monza Rose Competition in 1988, demonstrating sufficient ornamental merit and garden value to be included among contemporary international hybrid tea introductions of its time.
Growth and structure Bushy, erect, clump-forming shrub reaching about 80–105 cm high and 45–65 cm wide. Moderately thorny shoots with dense, glossy, dark green foliage creating a solid, structural presence in beds and borders.
Flower morphology Double, cup-shaped solitary hybrid tea blooms, typically 26–39 petals and medium size (approximately 4–7 cm across). Flowers are borne singly on long stems, repeat well, with a notably abundant second flush in season.
Colour and phenology Deep, even dark-red flowers with slightly lighter undersides; buds nearly black-red. Opens vivid ruby red, then deepens to maroon with brownish-red edges. Excellent colour retention; in strong sun tones lighten slightly yet remain rich.
Fragrance and aroma Mild, restrained scent with a gentle fruity character rather than a heavy perfume. Not overwhelming near doors or seating areas, offering a subtle fragrance that complements its visual impact without dominating small spaces.
Rose hip characteristics Occasionally forms small, egg-shaped orange-red hips, about 10–14 mm in diameter. These develop after un-deadheaded flowers and can provide modest late-season interest without significantly affecting the plant’s overall habit.
Resistance and hardiness Hardy to approximately −21 to −18 °C (H7, USDA 6b, Swedish zone 3). Moderate disease resistance overall, with good black-spot resistance but some susceptibility to powdery mildew and rust; benefits from basic monitoring and care.
Horticultural recommendations Best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil; water during prolonged droughts. Maintenance medium: deadhead as spent blooms do not self-clean well. Recommended spacing 45–95 cm depending on use; ideal for borders and cutting.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
