NEPTUNE – mauve-lilac hybrid tea rose – Tom Carruth

If You dream of a romantic yet dependable rose, NEPTUNE offers large, classic hybrid tea blooms in an unusual mauve-lilac shade with a smoky violet rim, carried on upright, bushy growth that suits front gardens and smaller beds. The strongly scented flowers combine a rich, slightly sweet rose-citrus perfume with mildly fruity notes, giving You the feel of a traditional cutting rose without demanding expert care. Its generally very good disease resistance keeps foliage healthy even in our damp Irish weather, coping well with conditions where humidity-driven fungi can be an issue. As an own-root, 2-litre plant, it arrives well established and ready to settle in, forming a long-lived, stable shrub that regenerates reliably over time. In year one it concentrates on roots, in year two the bush fills out with stronger shoots, and by year three You enjoy its full ornamental impact. NEPTUNE’s fade-resistant flower colour, strong fragrance, and polished, glossy foliage make it ideal if You want a rose that looks special yet remains manageable in everyday family gardens, rewarding light, regular care with a summer of repeat flowering and elegant, high-centred blooms for the house.

Use cases

Target areaReason
Front garden focal point by the entrance Large, high-centred blooms in an unusual mauve-lilac shade create an immediate focal point near the front door, giving a “planted bouquet” look from the path or driveway while the upright, bushy habit stays compact enough for modest Irish front gardens, ideal for the beginner
Small cutting patch near the kitchen or patio Long-stemmed, exhibition-style flowers are perfect for vases, with strong, sweet rose-citrus fragrance filling the house; remontant flowering means several flushes through the season, so even a handful of bushes can supply regular indoor arrangements for the homeowner
Mixed rose bed in a family back garden Reliable repeat flowering and good disease resistance make planning mixed rose beds easier, as NEPTUNE holds healthy leaves and colour between flushes, reducing spraying and fuss while blending well with softer pinks, whites and purples for the busy
Sunny border in coastal or exposed sites Sturdy, upright growth with glossy foliage and fade-resistant petals stands up well where strong light and breezes might bleach or batter more delicate varieties, coping with our windy, rain-laden Atlantic fronts that often test Irish gardens for the coastal
Specimen rose in a large container Works well as a statement plant in a minimum 40–50 litre pot on a patio or balcony, where its bushy shape and XL flowers can be appreciated up close; own-root planting ensures a long-lived, regenerating specimen when repotted and watered sensibly for the urban
Low-maintenance decorative bed by the driveway Moderate maintenance needs and generally very good resistance to black spot and mildew make NEPTUNE suitable for planted strips You only visit at weekends, giving an ordered, stylish effect with simple mulching and a yearly feed sufficient for the time-poor
Cottage-style planting with fragrant emphasis Strong fragrance and romantic colour sit beautifully among traditional perennials; the upright form slots into narrow borders, offering scented stems to pick while still reading as a classic, old-fashioned garden rose in relaxed cottage schemes for the romantic
Small groups of 3–5 roses as a feature island bed Planting in groups enhances colour impact and provides a rounded, bushy mass of blooms; own-root plants knit together into a stable, long-lived clump that recovers well from pruning and harsh winters, building presence year after year for the planner

Decorating ideas

  • Lavender entrance duo – flank a front path with two NEPTUNE bushes underplanted with low sweet alyssum for a soft mauve-and-white welcome – perfect for homeowners wanting neat, scented front gardens
  • Patio perfume pot – grow NEPTUNE in a 40–50 litre terracotta container and pair with trailing goldmoss stonecrop for easy summer colour – suited to balcony and small-terrace gardeners
  • Cottage mauve drift – weave NEPTUNE through a border of catmint, foxgloves and old-fashioned pinks to create a hazy, romantic cottage look – ideal for lovers of traditional Irish country gardens
  • Evening scent corner – combine NEPTUNE with lavender and rosemary near a seating area so cut blooms and foliage release fragrance as You brush past – great for busy families who relax outdoors after work
  • Cool coastal mix – in breezier sites, mix NEPTUNE with hydrangeas and blue ceanothus for a resilient, sea-toned composition – designed for coastal gardeners seeking low-fuss structure and colour

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData

Origin and breeding Bred by Tom Carruth (Weeks Wholesale Rose Grower, Inc., USA). Parentage: (‘Blueberry Hill’ × ‘Stephen’s Big Purple’) × ‘Blue Nile’. Introduced 2003; protected 2006 USA (PP 16 614), 2008 Australia (AU3678P PBR).
Awards and recognitions Rose Hills Gold Medal at the Rose Hills International Rose Trials, Pageant of Roses Garden, Whittier, California, recognising its garden performance and exhibition quality blooms.
Growth and structure Bushy, upright hybrid tea with moderately dense, glossy dark green foliage and moderate prickles. Forms a clump-forming shrub suitable for specimen planting, beds and larger containers in average family gardens.
Flower morphology Large XL, very double flowers (around 26–39 petals) with high-centred, pointed buds of classic cut-rose form, borne mainly in clusters of 3–5 per stem, remontant with abundant second and later flushes.
Colour and phenology Lavender–mauve blooms with a smoky violet-lilac rim that deepens at petal edges; petals are notably fade-resistant in strong sun, with only moderate lightening as flowers age. Colour remains decorative through multiple flushes.
Fragrance and aroma Strong, distinct scent combining rich rose notes with a slightly sweet citrus and mild fruity character. Showy, scented flowers attract bees and butterflies, though forage is limited by the very double form.
Rose hip characteristics Where hips form, they are small, around 5–10 mm across. Decorative effect is modest and hips are usually secondary to the variety’s repeat-flowering and cutting qualities in normal garden use.
Resistance and hardiness Generally very good resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust; may need some protection in very humid, fungus-prone areas. Hardy approximately to −21 to −18 °C (H6, USDA 6b, Swedish zone 3) with normal winter care.
Horticultural recommendations Best in full sun but tolerates partial shade; keep soil well drained yet moist. Space 40–95 cm depending on use, 2.6–2.9 plants/m² for mass planting. Suitable for beds, specimen use, exhibition cutting and large containers over 40–50 litres.

NEPTUNE combines strongly scented, fade-resistant mauve-lilac blooms with good disease resistance and long-lived own-root growth, giving You an elegant, reliable hybrid tea for beds or containers to enjoy and plant with confidence.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
