RED DRIFT® – red groundcover rose – Meilland
RED DRIFT® is a compact, spreading groundcover rose that gives You a neat, low-maintenance carpet of flame-red flowers for the front of borders and paths. Its natural spreading habit quickly knits together bare soil, helping to suppress weeds and keep the garden looking orderly without constant work. The dense, glossy foliage and self-cleaning blooms stay attractive even in unsettled Irish weather, coping well with a wet climate and heavier soils where drainage needs a little extra attention. Planted as a 2-litre, own-root shrub, it settles in reliably, forming a long-lived base that regenerates well after pruning or winter knocks. In the first year it concentrates on rooting, in the second on stronger shoots, and by the third year You can expect full, stable ornamental value with a lasting drift of red across Your garden.

Target area
Reason
Front garden edging along paths or driveways
Low, ground-hugging habit and dense branching create a precise edging line that stays compact and tidy without frequent clipping, ideal when You want a smart look from the street with very little upkeep for busy homeowners and beginners
Small urban beds with limited planting space
The modest height and 60–90 cm spread make it perfect for tight beds in city gardens, where it quickly fills gaps, covers bare soil and reduces weeding, giving reliable colour even where space, time and gardening experience are all in short supply for newcomers
Low-maintenance family borders around the home
Good disease resistance and self-cleaning flowers mean fewer sprays and little deadheading, so borders stay attractive with minimal intervention, fitting well into family routines where gardening has to fit around school runs and work demands for busy families
Informal cottage-style drifts of red groundcover
The spreading form and repeating flushes of small, semi-double blooms create a flowing red drift that blends naturally with perennials and grasses, ideal for relaxed cottage-style planting that still feels looked-after without precise pruning for romantic-garden lovers
Stabilising gentle slopes or banks
Its low, branching structure helps cover sloping ground and shade the soil, supporting moisture retention and weed suppression while giving a neat, ornamental finish that avoids complex terracing, suitable for those managing awkward banks who prefer simple solutions for homeowners
Coastal or exposed front gardens
With proven urban and heat tolerance and good general toughness, it copes well where wind and salt spray can be challenging, maintaining glossy foliage and colour where more delicate roses struggle, helpful for seaside or open-site gardeners seeking resilient planting for coastlines
Large containers on patios and balconies
Its compact height and spreading canopy work beautifully in a wide, low container of at least 40–50 litres, where roots have room to develop and the cascading red display softens hard surfaces, perfect for small patios, balconies and rented spaces for container-gardening enthusiasts
Low, informal hedging or bed edging in clay soils
Once established from its own roots, it forms a durable, slowly thickening line that adapts to heavier Irish garden soils, provided basic drainage is ensured in wetter spells, creating a long-lived planting with steady colour for low-effort garden structure for time-poor gardeners
Decorating ideas
Red Ribbon Border – Plant RED DRIFT® as a continuous edging along a front path, underplanting with low spring bulbs for early colour followed by the red “ribbon” of roses – ideal for neat, easy-care front gardens.
Cottage Drift Mix – Combine with soft pink or white echinaceas and airy ornamental grasses to create a relaxed cottage feel, where the red groundcover ties the planting together – perfect for lovers of romantic, wildlife-friendly borders.
Urban Step-Up – Use in wide, low containers of 40–50 litres by the front door, pairing with dwarf lavender or rosemary for fragrance and structure – great for busy urban dwellers wanting a smart, low-fuss entrance.
Low Slope Tapestry – On a gentle bank, weave RED DRIFT® between tough groundcovers such as thyme and low grasses to hold soil and give a tapestry of colour – suited to homeowners taming awkward, hard-to-mow slopes.
Glossy Green Contrast – Set the vivid red blooms against dark evergreen backdrops like holly or cherry laurel, using the rose as a bright, low foreground accent – ideal for those who enjoy year-round structure with seasonal flower highlights.
Technical cultivar profile
Parameter
Data
Name and registration
Groundcover shrub rose from the Drift collection. Registered as MEIgalpio, marketed as Red Drift, Drift and MEIgalpio; ARS exhibition name Nature Meillandécor, primarily sold as RED DRIFT for garden use.
Origin and breeding
Bred by Alain Meilland, Meilland International, France. Complex parentage including The Fairy, Kormax and Morpapplay. Bred 2004, registered 2007, introduced after 2007 through Meilland Richardier and Star Roses.
Awards and recognitions
Internationally proven cultivar with trial success, including honours from Rose Hills Memorial Park International Rose Trials in the USA and a Bronze Medal at the 2011 Gifu International Rose Trials in Japan.
Growth and structure
Low, spreading groundcover habit, 30–50 cm high and 60–90 cm wide. Dense, glossy, dark green foliage with sparse prickles. Forms a broad, carpet-like shrub ideal for edging, banks and the front of mixed borders.
Flower morphology
Small, semi-double blooms with around 13–25 petals, borne in clusters on short stems. Flat flower form with a plentiful second flush, providing long seasonal interest with minimal deadheading, thanks to good self-cleaning ability.
Colour and phenology
Vibrant, saturated red flowers with scarlet edges and deep red buds. Colour remains stable even in heat, with only slight fading to softer cherry-red tones. Creates an intense flame-red disc at full bloom over a long flowering season.
Fragrance and aroma
Light, rosy fragrance with a very weak overall intensity, often barely noticeable in the garden. Primarily chosen for colour, form and groundcover performance rather than scent, making it suited to visual impact plantings.
Rose hip characteristics
Rose-hip set is usually sparse due to continuous flowering. When present, hips are small, spherical, bright red, around 5–8 mm in diameter and can add a discreet late-season accent without dominating the plant.
Resistance and hardiness
Very hardy shrub, tolerating approximately −32 to −29 °C (USDA 4b, Swedish zone 5). Good heat and moderate drought tolerance. Rated resistant to powdery mildew, black spot and rust, suiting low-spray, low-maintenance gardens.
Horticultural recommendations
Best in full sun, in beds, edging, slopes or large containers. Allow about 80 cm for mass plantings or 130 cm as a solitary. Plant in well-drained soil, watering during establishment and prolonged dry spells; prune lightly to shape.
RED DRIFT® offers compact spreading growth, vivid long-season colour and low-maintenance, disease-resistant performance on its own roots for long-term reliability, making it a reassuring choice if You want a rose that simply works.

Product Identification Data
Product Name:
RED DRIFT® – red groundcover rose - Meilland
Product Type:
pharmaROSA® ORIGINAL - 2-litre own-root potted rose
Cultivar Name Meaning:
The name refers to the low, spreading habit of the Drift series and to the flower colour, red, and MEIgalpio is the breeder's code.
Pollinator Attraction:
Its semi-double, fragrant blooms have limited stamen accessibility, which makes them less attractive to pollinating insects.
Pollinator-Friendly Rating:
Semi-double-flowered variety, partially pollinator-friendly; because the stamens are partially concealed it only moderately attracts pollinators.
Rose Hip Notes:
Rose‑hip formation is expected to be slight due to the continuously flowering blooms. Occasionally spherical, vivid red (RHS 45A) rose hips 5–8 mm in diameter may appear.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
