Name and registration
Robusta® (KORgosa) is a park-shrub rose from the Shrub, Hybrid Rugosa group, registered with the American Rose Society as Robusta and offered as a park rose for garden and landscape use.
Origin and breeding
Bred by Reimer Kordes at W. Kordes’ Söhne, Germany, from a cross of an unknown seedling with Rosa rugosa regeliana; bred 1978 and introduced and registered in 1979 as a vigorous, hardy landscape shrub.
Awards and recognitions
Received the German ADR award in 1980 in recognition of its garden performance and health; this distinction was later withdrawn as part of ADR scheme revisions, but the cultivar remains widely valued by gardeners.
Growth and structure
Strong, upright shrub rose reaching about 160–220 cm in height with a 100–160 cm spread, densely foliated with dark green, glossy leaves and notably thorny shoots, forming a robust, wind-resistant framework over time.
Flower morphology
Single to semi-double flowers with about 5–12 petals, flat in form and produced in conspicuous clusters; small blooms measuring roughly 0.5–1.5 inches, with good natural self-cleaning as spent flowers drop readily.
Colour and phenology
Closed buds are dark crimson, opening to brilliant scarlet-red blooms that darken slightly toward the centre; colour lightens a little in strong sun but generally holds well, with remontant flowering and an especially abundant second flush.
Fragrance and aroma
