BOSSA NOVA – medium-pink bedding floribunda rose - Olesen & Olesen

Let BOSSA NOVA bring a gentle, romantic rhythm to your front garden: a floribunda rose that forms a low, bushy, spreading carpet of bloom, ideal for edging paths, driveways and cottage-style beds. Its flowers come in generous clusters of medium-pink rosettes, opening in waves from early summer and then again in a plentiful second flush, so Your borders keep their colour for much of the season without complicated routines. The dense, slightly glossy foliage knits the plant into a neat, rounded shape that looks tidy even between flowering peaks and covers the soil effectively. BOSSA NOVA also copes well with Irish rain and heavier soils when You provide basic drainage, helping it manage typical humidity and coastal weather. In a 2-litre own-root pot, the plant arrives well established and ready to start, gradually forming its permanent structure in Your garden for years of dependable enjoyment. It suits partial shade as well as open sun, and because it remains relatively low, it fits beautifully into small and medium family plots, bringing reliable flowering charm whether placed near the door, along a path or softening the edge of a lawn.

Use cases

Target areaReason
Front-garden edging along paths or driveways The naturally bushy, spreading habit creates a low, continuous line of flowers and foliage that tidies path edges without needing intricate pruning, perfect when You want an easy, welcoming first impression for busy homeowners
Small rose groups in ornamental beds Planted in groups of three to five, the generous cluster-flowering habit quickly builds dense, rounded mounds with many small rosettes, giving impact from a modest planting area and helping beginners achieve a full, balanced look for new gardeners
Mixed cottage-style borders near the house The medium-pink rosette blooms and uniform colour blend well with perennials and shrubs, adding soft, romantic structure without clashing, ideal where You want a traditional cottage feel around windows, doors and seating areas for cottage-garden fans
Low groundcover on gentle slopes or banks The wide-spreading, dense foliage helps cover soil on mild slopes, limiting bare patches and reducing weed competition, while the own-root character supports long-term stability and recovery after trimming for practical gardeners
Part-shaded town gardens and side passages Because it tolerates partial shade, BOSSA NOVA suits those side gardens or north-east facing front spaces where sun hours are limited, still providing a good show of flowers without demanding a perfect, all-day sunny spot for urban households
Containers on patios, balconies and porches In a quality 40–50 litre container with drainage, its compact height and spreading form give a rounded, flowery presence by doors or seating, and the moderate maintenance suits people who prefer straightforward watering and feeding routines for apartment dwellers
Simple family beds with limited maintenance time The combination of moderate self-cleaning and remontant flowering means that, once established, a light tidy of spent blooms is usually enough to keep it presentable, fitting well where families want colour but only occasional gardening sessions for time-poor families
Informal coastal and rural gardens Its dense foliage and flexible, spreading branches cope well with breezier, damper situations typical of Irish coastal and rural sites, especially where heavier soil is given basic drainage to handle persistent wet weather for Irish garden owners

Decorating ideas

  • Pink Cottage Edge – Line a front path with BOSSA NOVA and alternate with small clumps of lavender for scent and soft structure – ideal for cottage-style enthusiasts
  • Courtyard Carpet – Create a low, flowering carpet in a sunny courtyard bed, mixing BOSSA NOVA with dwarf catmint and hardy geraniums – perfect for low-maintenance homeowners
  • Pastel Patio Pot – Plant a single BOSSA NOVA in a 40–50 litre terracotta container with trailing thyme around the rim – suited to balcony and patio gardeners
  • Soft Slope Cover – Use repeating groups on a gentle bank, underplanting with hardy groundcover perennials to stabilise soil – great for practical family gardens
  • Front-Door Welcome – Flank your entrance with BOSSA NOVA in mixed beds beside evergreen box and soft grasses – appealing to those seeking a neat, inviting doorway

Technical cultivar profile
CharacteristicData
Name and registration Floribunda group bedding rose; registered as POUloma, marketed as BOSSA NOVA – Floribunda POULSEN. American Rose Society Approved Exhibition Name: Bossa Nova, part of the Floribunda POULSEN collection.
Origin and breeding Bred in Denmark in 1983 by L. Pernille Olesen and Mogens Nyegaard Olesen for Poulsen Roser A/S; parentage unknown seedling × ‘The Fairy’. Registered 1998 and introduced commercially after 1998.
Growth and structure Bushy, widely spreading floribunda shrub rose, 75–105 cm high with a 120–180 cm spread. Dense, slightly glossy green foliage (RHS 147A) and moderate prickliness; suited to bedding, edging and low, informal hedging.
Flower morphology Small (0.5–1.5 in) rosette-shaped flowers with 40+ petals, very double and cluster-flowering. Remontant, producing a plentiful second flush after the main early summer display; moderate self-cleaning of spent blooms.
Colour and phenology Uniform medium-pink flowers with deeper buds; freshly opened blooms show pure mid-pink petals with a paler edge, then fade gradually to pastel and pale pink tones as they age. Good colour retention through the flowering period.
Fragrance and aroma Fragrance is very faint and barely perceptible, with no distinct scent profile recorded. Chosen primarily for colour effect, structure and bedding performance rather than aromatic impact in the garden.
Rose hip characteristics Moderately formed rose hips, typically 10–16 mm in diameter. Hips may appear after flowering if spent blooms are not removed, adding a light seasonal accent but not the main ornamental feature.
Resistance and hardiness Hardy to approximately -26 to -23 °C (RHS H7; USDA Zone 5b; Swedish Zone 4). Medium resistance to powdery mildew, black spot and rust; benefits from good air circulation and occasional preventive care in humid seasons.
Horticultural recommendations Recommended for groundcover, beds, edging, parks, urban planting and gentle slopes. Suitable for partial shade. For containers, use at least 40–50 litres with drainage. Moderate maintenance; water in dry spells and feed annually.

BOSSA NOVA offers low, spreading colour, cluster-flowering charm and partial-shade versatility, while its own-root form supports long-term, dependable growth; a sound choice if You want beauty without complex care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
