ELMSHORN® – deep pink park rose - Kordes

If You like traditional shrub roses with a natural, slightly informal look, Elmshorn® gives You generous clusters of deep pink blooms on a tall, upright bush that fits well into Irish family gardens. Its semi-double flowers are easily reached by bees, so they offer a gently wildlife-friendly touch, and the long, remontant season means colour returning in flushes from early summer onwards. As an own-root shrub, it develops a reliable framework of shoots over time, giving good longevity and the ability to regenerate from the base if it is cut back hard after bad winters or pruning mistakes. In the first year it quietly builds roots, in the second it pushes stronger shoots, and by the third season You can expect its full character and ornamental effect across the planting. The tall, bushy habit makes an excellent flowering hedge or backdrop for cottage-style borders, and clusters of small, deep pink, cup-shaped blooms sit nicely above light green, glossy foliage. Elmshorn® copes reliably with our cool summers and can settle well even where humidity and frequent rain are part of normal garden life.

Use cases

Target area Reason
Front garden feature shrub Use Elmshorn® as a single, eye-catching shrub near your front gate or bay window, where its tall, upright habit and clusters of deep pink flowers give a classic rose welcome without needing complicated shaping – ideal for beginners
Loose flowering hedge Planted at 110–120 cm spacing, Elmshorn® forms a tall, bushy, semi-formal hedge that brings colour and privacy through summer, while its own-root nature lets the hedge recover well from harder pruning over the years – reassuring for homeowners
Cottage-style mixed border Combine Elmshorn® with airy perennials and ornamental grasses to soften its upright framework; the remontant flowering provides repeated splashes of deep pink among lavender, feverfew and switchgrass, ideal for romantic gardeners
Small groups in lawn or open beds Groups of 3–5 plants in a lawn pocket or island bed create a broad, flower-covered dome; the shrubs gradually knit together into a long-lived, own-root thicket, suiting those who prefer planting once and then gentle upkeep
Wildlife-friendly family garden corner The semi-double, cluster-flowered blooms offer accessible nectar, and the moderate crop of small red hips extends interest for birds, giving a soft wildlife-friendly feel that still looks ornamental – attractive to nature-loving families
Urban front garden with simple layout In narrow city front gardens, a single Elmshorn® or a short row offers upright structure, colour and a traditional look, while coping steadily with a wet, cool climate and frequent rain – a practical choice for busy urban residents
Large container on patio or balcony Grown in a minimum 40–50 litre container, Elmshorn® becomes a vertical accent with deep pink clusters at eye level; own-root growth helps it adapt to the pot and reshoot if cut back, suiting those who like long-term patio plantings
Background shrub in park-style plantings As a tall, bushy park rose, Elmshorn® works well behind lower perennials and small shrubs, giving a traditional rose presence that takes a few seasons to reach full impact, fitting gardeners who enjoy watching a planting slowly mature

Decorating ideas

  • COTTAGE HEDGE RIBBON – Plant Elmshorn® in a loose row and underplant with feverfew and catmint for a soft, white-and-pink cottage look – for lovers of relaxed, country-style gardens
  • URBAN FRONT FOCUS – Flank a front path with two Elmshorn® shrubs, adding low Ilex crenata balls for year-round structure – for homeowners wanting smart kerb appeal with a traditional twist
  • PINK-AND-GRASS BORDER – Pair Elmshorn® with Panicum ‘Sangria’ and airy ornamental grasses so the deep pink clusters float above waving seedheads – for design-conscious gardeners seeking movement and texture
  • PATIO STATEMENT POT – Grow one Elmshorn® in a 50 litre terracotta container, underplanting with trailing thyme for scent and soft edges – for balcony and terrace users who prefer one strong, long-lived feature
  • WILDLIFE FAMILY CORNER – Mix Elmshorn® with bee-friendly perennials and leave the autumn hips for birds to enjoy – for families creating a child-friendly, nature-focused play-and-discovery space

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Elmshorn® is a hybrid musk / Lambertiana shrub rose sold as a park rose; exhibition category shrub rose; ARS exhibition name Elmshorn; unregistered variety used widely in gardens and parks.
Origin and breeding Bred by Reimer Kordes (W. Kordes’ Söhne, Germany) from ‘Hamburg’ × ‘Verdun’; introduced in 1951 and first distributed by W. Kordes’ Söhne, becoming a classic mid‑century shrub rose.
Awards and recognitions Holder of an RNRS Certificate of Merit (1950) and an early ADR award (1950, later withdrawn), reflecting historic garden value and performance in trial grounds of that period.
Growth and structure Upright, bushy shrub reaching about 120–190 cm high and 100–160 cm wide; moderately thorny, with moderately dense, glossy light green foliage providing a full yet not overly heavy effect.
Flower morphology Semi-double, cup-shaped flowers with around 13–25 petals, borne in clusters; small blooms (about 0.5–1.5 inches) repeat freely, giving a remontant habit with a notably abundant second flush.
Colour and phenology Deep pink, cherry-toned flowers; buds are dark pink with a purple tinge, opening to intense deep pink that lightens with heat and age, with petal edges paling while the centre remains more saturated.
Fragrance and aroma Fragrance is very weak and barely perceptible; no defined scent character recorded, so it is best chosen for colour, flowering habit and shrub effect rather than notable perfume in the garden.
Rose hip characteristics Produces moderate numbers of small spherical hips, about 6–10 mm across, coloured red (RHS 40A), adding a modest wildlife and decorative element through late summer and into autumn.
Resistance and hardiness Fully hardy to about −32 to −29 °C (H7, USDA 4b, Sweden zone 5); however, foliage is very susceptible to powdery mildew, black spot and rust, so regular protection and hygiene are required.
Horticultural recommendations Best in full sun with good air movement and free-draining soil; avoid persistent shade. Needs regular spraying and deadheading, plus attentive feeding and watering in dry spells for best flowering.

Elmshorn® offers traditional deep pink clusters, wildlife interest and a tall shrub presence, while its own-root habit supports long-term regeneration and structure; consider it if You want a lasting, characterful rose in your garden.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
