SHIRABE – white hybrid tea rose – Kunieda
Created by Japanese breeder Kunieda Keiji, SHIRABE is a compact hybrid tea rose that brings a gentle sense of harmony and calm to smaller Irish gardens. Its upright, medium-sized bush fits neatly into front beds and borders, while the very double, snow-white blooms carry a strong tea fragrance that You notice every time You pass by the door or patio. With good disease resistance and low maintenance needs, it suits busy households who still want a refined, “special” rose. The flowers open ivory-cream and mature to a clear, powder white, holding their shape well as cut flowers in a vase. As an own-root plant in the pharmaROSA® ORIGINAL 2‑litre pot, SHIRABE settles steadily into heavier Irish soils, coping reliably even when the garden sees frequent rainfall and occasional waterlogging pressure. In the first year it concentrates on roots, the second on stronger shoots, and by the third year it reveals its full ornamental potential as a long-lived, well-balanced garden rose.

Technical cultivar profile
Property
Data
Name and registration
SHIRABE – white hybrid tea rose – Kunieda. Trade name used in commerce; hybrid tea rose group and exhibition category suitable for cut flowers and garden display, meaning “melody, tune” in Japanese.
Origin and breeding
Hybrid tea bred by Kunieda Keiji at Rose Farm Keiji, Moriyama, Japan. Parentage from ‘Misaki (2007) bare-root’. Introduced in 2014, representing modern Japanese breeding focused on refined flower form and fragrance.
Growth and structure
Upright, medium-sized bush, typically 95–125 cm high with a 70–90 cm spread. Moderately dense, dark green foliage and moderate prickliness. Well suited to beds, borders and as a specimen in average-sized home gardens.
Flower morphology
Very double, ball to pompon-shaped blooms with 40+ petals. Solitary flowers of medium size (1.5–2.75 in), well-formed for cutting and exhibition use. Remontant with generous repeat, especially when regularly deadheaded.
Colour and phenology
Ivory buds with creamy centre open to silky, homogeneous white blooms. Colour lightens to an opalescent powder-white as flowers age. Overall effect is a pure snow-white rose with a subtly warm, creamy heart at early stages.
Fragrance and aroma
Strong, classic tea-rose perfume, noticeable both in the garden and indoors when used as a cut flower. Fragrance is long lasting on the stem, adding sensory impact to entrances, seating areas and mixed ornamental plantings.
Rose hip characteristics
Produces small, spherical rose hips only sparingly due to very double flowers. When present, hips are orange-red, about 8–12 mm in diameter, adding occasional late-season interest without dominating the plant’s appearance.
Resistance and hardiness
Good disease resistance, with noted resistance to powdery mildew, black spot and rust. Hardy to approximately –21 to –18 °C (USDA 6b, RHS H7), performing well in typical Irish garden conditions with regular watering in dry spells.
Horticultural recommendations
Best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates heavier soils improved with organic matter. Space 55 cm for mass planting or 90 cm as a specimen. Ideal for beds, specimen use and cutting, with generally low maintenance needs.
SHIRABE offers strongly scented white blooms, reliable disease resistance and compact structure, and as an own-root hybrid tea it establishes for many years of easy enjoyment, making it a thoughtful choice if You want a dependable garden rose.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
