SONIA MEILLAND® – salmon pink hybrid tea rose – Meilland
If You dream of a rose that looks elegant without needing complicated care, SONIA MEILLAND® is made for You. This upright, hybrid tea rose produces beautifully formed, florist-style blooms in a warm salmon pink that holds its charm from bud to fully open flower. Each high-centred blossom is ideal for cutting, so You can enjoy fresh bouquets from Your own garden as well as colour in the border. The plant’s dense, glossy dark-green foliage sets off the flowers and gives a neat, tidy impression in front gardens and smaller beds. Bred for reliable performance, it offers solid disease resistance and copes well with Ireland’s damp weather and heavier soils when given reasonable drainage. As an own-root, 2-litre plant, it settles in steadily and can give You a long-lived, stable shrub that matures from strong roots in year one to fuller shoots in year two, reaching its best ornamental value by year three. With low day-to-day maintenance and dependable flowering, it fits effortlessly into busy family gardens where You want to plant it once and simply let it get on with the job.

Target area
Reason
Front garden focal rose
The classic, high-centred hybrid tea blooms stand out as a front-garden statement without dominating a small space. Its upright habit and tidy outline give a smart look beside a path or doorway, ideal for adding polish for busy homeowners
Cutting patch or allotment row
Originally bred as a florists rose, SONIA MEILLAND® produces well-shaped, medium-sized blooms on strong stems that are excellent for the vase. Plant in a simple row and You can pick reliable, shell-pink cut flowers all summer with minimal specialist know-how for beginner florists
Small rose group in a family garden
Planted in groups of three to five at the recommended spacing, it forms a harmonious, upright mass of salmon-pink flowers and dark foliage. Own-root plants gradually knit together into a stable, long-lived group that copes well with normal family-garden use for practical gardeners
Mixed border with perennials
The soft, warm pink tones blend easily with daylilies, spiraea and other cottage-style perennials, creating an informal yet refined look. Its repeat flowering brings structure and colour between perennial flushes, suiting mixed beds that must stay manageable for weekend gardeners
Neat hedge or edging line
With its upright habit, 35–40 cm spacing allows You to form a low, formal line along drives or paths. The glossy foliage and regular blooms create a tidy edge that needs only basic pruning and occasional deadheading to stay smart over many seasons for orderly planners
Sunny terrace or balcony container
In a 40–50 litre pot with good drainage, this rose brings florist-quality blooms close to seating areas. Regular watering and feeding are straightforward tasks, and its compact spread suits Irish townhouses and coastal balconies where space is limited but style still matters for urban dwellers
Cottage-style planting around the home
The romantic, salmon-pink flowers and glossy foliage pair beautifully with airy shrubs like smoke bush and low spiraea, echoing traditional Irish cottage gardens. Reliable repeat flowering keeps entrances and gable ends welcoming without complex maintenance routines for romantic traditionalists
Long-term, low-intervention rose bed
Good disease resistance and own-root vigour make it a sensible choice where You want roses that live for years with modest care. Well-prepared soil and attention to drainage at planting help it handle Ireland’s wet, heavy conditions, then it largely looks after itself for time-pressed owners
Decorating ideas
Classic doorway welcome – Plant two SONIA MEILLAND® on either side of your front path, underplanted with lavender for scent and contrast – ideal for homeowners who want a polished entrance without complicated planting schemes
Cottage border ribbon – Run a loose line of these roses through a mixed border with daylilies and spiraea – perfect for fans of relaxed cottage style who still like a dependable structure in the garden
Cut-flower corner – Dedicate a sunny bed to SONIA MEILLAND® with simple edging plants, giving a steady supply of salmon-pink stems for the vase – suited to beginners keen to grow their own arrangements
Patio feature pot – Place a single plant in a 40–50 litre terracotta container, surrounded by low herbs such as thyme and rosemary – great for balcony and terrace gardeners wanting maximum effect from limited space
Soft screening strip – Use a row of these roses along a fence, backed by a compact smoke bush for contrast – a good option for families needing a gentle visual screen that stays neat with only basic yearly pruning
Technical cultivar profile
Parameter
Data
Name and registration
Hybrid tea rose, florists rose and grandiflora type. Registered as MEIhelvet, traded as Sonia Meilland® – salmon pink hybrid tea rose – Meilland. ARS exhibition name: Sonia. Part of the hybrid tea rose commercial group.
Origin and breeding
Bred by Marie-Louise Meilland in France from ‘Zambra’ × (‘Baccará’ × ‘White Knight’). Meilland International introduced it in Europe around 1970; later distributed in the USA by Star Roses and Plants after 1974.
Growth and structure
Vigorous, upright bush reaching about 110–150 cm high with a 50–70 cm spread. Dense, dark green, glossy foliage and moderate prickles. Forms a tidy, vertical accent suited to beds, specimen planting and low hedging uses.
Flower morphology
Medium-sized, double flowers with 26–39 petals and a classic high-centred, pointed-bud, cut-rose form. Solitary blooms on stems, remontant with a notably generous second flush when given regular feeding and deadheading.
Colour and phenology
Pure salmon-pink flowers with a pale shell-pink veil and slightly coral centre. Buds are medium pink with peach-toned tips. Colour deepens in cool weather, lightens in strong sun. Fades gracefully to light pink with a soft creamy tint.
Fragrance and aroma
Gently scented rose with a mild, restrained perfume. The fragrance is soft and fruity rather than strong, adding an elegant note near paths and seating areas without overwhelming smaller gardens, patios or nearby windows.
Rose hip characteristics
Rose-hip production is usually minimal due to the double, florist-type blooms, though occasional small, spherical red hips 6–10 mm across may appear after flowers are left uncut late in the season.
Resistance and hardiness
Rated resistant overall, showing good tolerance to powdery mildew and rust, with moderate resistance to black spot. Hardy to about -15 to -12 °C (RHS H6, Swedish zone 2, USDA 7b), performing reliably in typical Irish garden conditions.
Horticultural recommendations
Best in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly in prolonged dry spells and deadhead to encourage repeat bloom. Suitable for beds, low hedging or cutting. Allow 35–65 cm spacing depending on group or specimen use.
SONIA MEILLAND® offers elegant cut-quality blooms, low daily maintenance and long-lived own-root reliability, giving You a graceful, salmon-pink hybrid tea that will reward simple, consistent care for many years if You choose to plant it.
Pollinator Attraction:
Its strongly double flower form and reduced stamen accessibility mean it attracts few pollinators.
Pollinator-Friendly Rating:
Double-flowered — the petals partially cover the stamens, so its pollinator-friendliness is limited; primarily an ornamental cultivar.
Rose Hip Notes:
Rose-hip formation is expected to be minimal due to the double-flowered habit; occasionally spherical red hips 6–10 mm in diameter may form.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
