Origin and breeding
Bred by Joseph Hardwick Pemberton at Pemberton Nursery, Essex, UK. Introduced in 1920. Parentage is ‘Château de Clos Vougeot’ crossed with an unknown seedling, reflecting Hybrid Musk and shrub lineage.
Growth and structure
Bushy shrub with arching shoots, 150–250 cm high and 90–150 cm wide. Medium-density dark green, glossy foliage and sparse prickles. Suited to groundcover, informal hedging, banks, and relaxed shrub plantings.
Flower morphology
Single, flat flowers with 5–12 petals in large, cluster-flowered trusses. Small blooms, approximately 0.5–1.5 inches, with good self-cleaning so most petals fall naturally, though some hips may still develop.
